René Descartes was a French mathematician, philosopher, and writer that spent nearly all of his adult life living in the Dutch Republic.
He is viewed as the inventor of modern-day philosophy and his Meditations on First Philosophy is still required text for many philosophy departments. He is very well-known for his philosophical declaration, “I think; therefore I am.”
