Life and career​​ Born in Saint-Denis, Quebec (then Canada East), the son of Jean-Charles Chapais, a Father of Canadian Confederation, and Henriette-Georgina.

Appointed professor of history at the Université Laval's Quebec City campus, Chapais inaugurated its renowned chair of Canadian history in He took over.
